We updated the numbers from our previous article from Q4 2015 which some surprising news.

WhatsApp is the first messenger to hit the mark of 1 billion monthly active users. This is in fact a positive indicator for messengers in general, as we can see that the overall usage of messengers is rising worldwide.

Telegram als hit an important benchmark: 100 million monthly active users. This too is a strong indicator for the rise of mobile messaging and it's benefits not only of sending and receiving messages, but also of third party integrations, chat bots and – of course – gifs.

Info: WeChat is truly one of the most innovative messengers. It includes mobile payment, online ordering, taxi hailing and much more. It is China's most popular messenger, too. It was founded in 2011.

Info: Founded 2010 in Israel, Viber was launched as Skype competitor, but it quickly became a popular app for messaging on mobile devices. Viber was sold for $900 million in 2014.
